Off to the beach in lovely sunshine

A morning on the beach. The gulls were out in force at this particular spot; they know when they're onto a good thing. For years now, a particular fisherman has sold his morning's catch from this point on the beach - weather and fish willing! Needless to say the gulls gather on the beach, the beach huts and in the sparkling sea - just awaiting the titbits!

I'm not attempting to identify any of the gulls, but if anyone wishes to.... then please do.

and for a spot of colour...

All your pictures are just beautiful but the second one (no idea what bird that is) is incredible!
I hope your morning at the sea was as wonderful as the time while I enjoyed your beach pictures.

Carin - thanks. I don't know what the gull is; I could hazard a guess and say it's a Black-backed Gull - but which sort I wouldn't know.

Perhaps someone else might?

Ooh a gull challenge! Not that I'm an expert, but I do like to have a go at these. Someone will probably chime in to say I'm wrong, but here goes. I'm not doing these off the top of my head, by the way. I have my Collins to hand!

I think pics one and two are Great Black-backed Gulls - the first one obviously a juvenile. The bill is too heavy for Herring Gull or Lesser Black-backed.

Pic four (and possibly five) looks like Ring-billed Gull.

Pic 6 - not too sure. They look like different species to me. The back one has a heavier bill. You have to look at what adults are around and then make an educated guess. If I were a betting person, I would go for Great Black-backed at back, Lesser Black-backed or Herring in front.

Di - thanks for your efforts with these. I must consult my Collins too - the only one I could attempt so far is BBGull in pic 2.

I find Gulls very confusing.

Pete - thanks.

Ah OK. I did say I wasn't a gull expert. And sometimes even the guide books are not that clear.

I find gulls quite confusing, too, as you can probably see!
