Skywatch Friday

I took this picture in West Sussex, UK (on 30 July 2006) because I like the cloud formation.

I've only just resurrected it and discovered this.
I believe it's a Buzzard

That's a great shot. Love those clouds and cool that you got the bird in there. Bonus. I'm a newbie to SWF and loving what everyone does.

I love seeing clouds like this, and it's great that you captured the buzzard in there too. Nice photo!

Over in the UK I have heard it called a buzzard, but here in the U.S. a buzzard is a bird that only eats on things already dead.

This is some type of hawk which I am told will eat stuff already dead but I have never witnessed it. I always see them diving to catch something...there are those that could probably tell you what kind it is maybe by the length of his tail/shape. I am not that good.

Anyway, I really like this picture...don't you like discovering something like that in one.

Pretty nice capture of the burst of clouds and that bird :)

Cool shots -- did you know that Blake, the poet, wrote about skies like that -- he called them mackerel skies, after the skin of that fish...

Hi Tricia, just catching up on blogs as we were away last weekend camping in Norfolk for a few days. I think your bird may be a Sparrowhawk. The tail looks a bit long for Buzzard.

Hi Digi - hope you had a good time in Norfolk :)

Sparrowhawks and Buzzards are around in W. Sussex but I'll bow to your greater knowledge. Thanks Di.

Had a great time, thanks, apart from all the screaming kids that arrived Friday and Saturday!!

I'm not too sure about greater knowledge! I was just going on the tail length and wing shape, which is not really right for Buzzard. When Keith had a look just now his first comment was a harrier of some sort - possibly Hen Harrier, but I've had a look at the BirdGuides DVD and I'm still going with Sparrowhawk.

Plus, I suppose it depends how big it looked in reality - it's hard to say when you have no idea of scale.

Di - thanks for your further comments. Pete thinks Sphawk too and I'm in agreement about wing shape etc. It was incredibly high up - in fact I was taking pics of the clouds and didn't even notice the bird until I got pic on PC!!
