Would have been so easy to stay indoors and shut out the wet, but we headed off for Thaxted... a couple of interesting churches, and also a rather nice tea room :). Poppy's Tea Room is closing at the end of this week, and are relocating to a, as yet undisclosed, new venue. I hope they aren't gone too long before opening in their new home, and wish them well in the meantime.
First stop was St. Marys the Virgin church at Tilty... (lovely name :) )
The ruins of the original Monastery (of which St Marys church was the chapel)
and then on to Thaxted and the Parish Church, St. Marys
we came back later to visit inside... both of us having visited many times before..
Lowe's Mill, Thaxted
and inside, St. Marys
All this church visiting is thirsty work, so we stopped at Poppy's Tea Room for a cuppa and a shared Victoria Sponge and some Christmas Cake with Tipsy Cream (think it was made with Brandy) - both were delish and the Christmas cake..... probably the best I've ever tasted...
