I think it is hoof/tinder fungus. It usually grows a new "layer" each year. I have had a look through my fungi books and it is about the nearest I could come up with. Nothing else similar.
I have seen them in the New Forest but not with so many layers.
Thanks so much Maurice - that seems to be a good suggestion.. another person has suggested this as well.. I shall try to find someone at the reserve who, hopefully, can confirm this... my small doubt it that shape.. there were 4 of the and all fairly regularly cylindrical in shape.. very curious!!
Interesting that Maurice thinks Hoof/Tinder but I agree Tricia shape was worrying me too. Hope you can get some info from people at the reserve. Still itching to know id!! :)
