Help please.. an ID needed for this fungi? wasp-type nest? etc etc.

I'm stumped.. have no idea despite many googles and asking others with more knowledge than me...

Anyone any ideas on this one... Maurice?

Hi Tricia

I think it is hoof/tinder fungus. It usually grows a new "layer" each year. I have had a look through my fungi books and it is about the nearest I could come up with. Nothing else similar.

I have seen them in the New Forest but not with so many layers.

I hope that this helps.

Cheers
Maurice

Thanks so much Maurice - that seems to be a good suggestion.. another person has suggested this as well.. I shall try to find someone at the reserve who, hopefully, can confirm this... my small doubt it that shape.. there were 4 of the and all fairly regularly cylindrical in shape.. very curious!!

Interesting that Maurice thinks Hoof/Tinder but I agree Tricia shape was worrying me too. Hope you can get some info from people at the reserve. Still itching to know id!! :)
