Off to the opera today at Royal Opera House to see La Fille du Regiment. Not being familiar at all with the music or the story-line - I was in for a treat. Donizetti was the composer of the opera which contained considerable humour - so fitting on a glorious day in summer like weather at the beginning of March in the UK!!
Juan Diego Florez took the part of Tonio.. and it was an outstanding performance.. he really has the most amazing voice and seems to sing without any effort whatsoever. His high 'Cs' were executed superbly and just wish an encore was possible in the middle of a production :D The aira "Ah! mes amis, quelle jour de fete! got a huge and voluble ovation.
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa playing the cameo role of La Duchesse de Creackentorp.. whilst this is purely a speaking role, a sung piece had been introduced that wasn't part of the original opera - so we were treated to her amazing voice. Whether this is good or bad is for other to decide, but it was lovely to hear her singing and she brought a presence to the proceedings.
Sulpice was wonderfully portrayed by Pietro Spagnoli - great performer too :)
The role of Marie was taken by Patrizia Ciofi who was really good in the role but perhaps her voice lacked a little something ?? I'm no expert so just my opinion. However, the comedy in her role was wonderful.
The day was marred a little - more of that in tomorrow's post with some London and birdy pictures.

Hello there! I am following your blog from down South in New Zealand and I am more than just a little envious :o) Mr Florez' voice is superb ... I hope I will get to see and listen to him sometime in the future, too.
