I met a friend for a walk today, and we went to the Devil's Punchbowl at Hindhead. The main A3 used to go straight through Hindhead until, after a very long time, the Hindhead tunnel was built .
Work started on the Tunnel in 2007 and was completed in 2011. It's 1.14 miles long.
Today Hindhead, is a very quiet village with fantastic views when you get up to the Common!
It was quite cloudy when we met up so we started with a coffee. Rather strange service from the young lady behind the counter.
We wandered off on the Sailor's Stroll (named after a sailor that was murdered there over 3 centuries ago)... this seemd the middle option between a more gentle stroll and the 1.5 hour walk.. it's very very very steep!!
Dartford Warblers and Nightjars are to be expected here - but neither of them today (a bit early in the day for Nightjars however!!) In fact it was very quiet in terms of birds; only heard about 3 in the time we were there!
A bit grey when we arrived.....
A tribute to the murdered Sailor!
and gradually the view started to become clearer!!
This was by the car park - with reference to the National Trust and the company that built the Tunnel... I'm still trying to understand it!!
and the other side!
We had lunch at the NT cafe... the food wasn't that good and the service by the very young ladies was cold, impersonal and patronising - a shame really!!
But nonetheless, a lovely walk in good company. Thank you IHD.....
