Sorrento Day 3 - 6 Oct at Herculaneum

The forecast was for rain again today - so not suitable for boat rides.  We headed off by train after brekkie for the ruins of Herculaneum.  I'd not been before, having visited only Pompei.  However most people had recommended Herculaneum over Pompei so off we headed.

It was quite dull initially and very humid.  Parts of some of the buildings were unavailable due to maintenance work and the way in and out were also receiving attention.  We collected audio guides and wandered off.

Needless to say, we saw lizards.  This one had different markings from the Wall Lizards (the green ones) we've seen mostly so far... this having black markings.

Cooking jars..

Into the Women's bathing chambers

Well.... do we stop off at Pompei on the way back?  It was very humid and uncomfortable so we decided (given the 1 hour's train journey) we would head back to the hotel and have a lazy afternoon in the hotel gardens.

Another Wall Lizard

and on the way, more Hummingbird Hawk Moths..

We walked through the hotel gardens..

the view straight down 'over the garden wall'

and Ponders rather likes the view as well.. but a little disappointed he & Quacks haven't seen any cousins yet...

We then went through the hotel  ...

We started to walk into town but... relaxation needs overtook us so.....

we went back to the hotel, to investigate the pontoon area down on the sea...  We sat in the little cafe having a coffee and relaxing.... and this was the view across the Bay of Naples looking towards Mount Vesuvius.  This is a private area to the hotel, for sitting soaking up the sun and steps lead down from the decks to go for a swim.  I dipped my toes in the warm sea... but no further..

A very content Pete... soppy but happy and relaxed...

and weather turned out better than expected.....  tomorrow we go along the coast ....

Herculaneum is quite an impressive site! Were there other people around, or did you have to time your photos to avoid the crowds? Great pics of the hummingbird moth; they are fast little creatures!

Thanks Wilma.... there were a few people around but not too bad; so fairly easy to get pics without people in them....

Yes - those little hummers are very speedy... there were many pics I deleted!!
