Guildford Castle..

I've lived in the Surrey and Sussex counties for most of my life but until very recently I'd never discovered or knew of Guildford Castle.  I heard reference to it on the radio the other day so this morning I headed off to find it.  It's thought that it was built just after the 1066 invasion of England by William the Conqueror.

Firstly the Castle is long since gone but the Keep remains and for a very small fee you can climb a short spiral staircase to a small viewing balcony (it's limited to 12 people at a time)...

The whole area is maintained by Guildford Borough Council and the gardens are stunning with beautifully orchestrated, planted and very colourful flower beds.

I bought my ticket and headed up into the Keep.  I was the only person there..

There is an embroidered huge creation of a character from the Game of Thrones..  Whether you're a fan of embroidery or not, this creation is amazing.  It must be about 15 feet tall...

and onwards through the Keep

up the spiral stairs..

and views from the top.  Not quite 360 degrees and the viewing platform is to one side of the Keep.

No idea, but intrigued, as to what this building is quite far away in the distance.

And after an enjoyable sit in the gardens in the (now returned) sunshine I headed back into the town for something to eat.

En route passing this shop which I will investigate further another time..

And lunch... salad and a cold drink.

Most enjoyable time out and so glad I went to discover and find Guildford Castle.
